Shingles vaccineWhen someone hears about the shingles vaccine, the first instinct is to schedule an appointment to their attending physician. Everyone seems to want to know everything there is to know about the shingles vaccine and how to get immunity to such an annoying condition. The truth is that the shingles vaccine only works for a few categories of patients: the elderly, the very young and those that have already manifested the physical symptoms of shingles once. Thus, it might help you only if you are over the age of sixty, if you have never had chicken pox or shingles and are under the age of five and if you have had an encounter with the annoying disease. Technically, the shingles vaccine contains some dead variations of the varicella zoster virus, the pathogen agent that causes chicken pox and shingles. It works just like any other vaccine out there: by stimulating immunity. Basically, the dead viruses enter the body and they are recognized by the immune system as enemies. This forces the body to produce more antibodies to fight the disease, but since the vaccine virus is already dead, those antibodies simply help keep you immune to any attack from the real and very much alive virus in your body. Of course, just like with any other vaccine, keep in mind that there could appear any number of unprecedented secondary reactions, that might cause more damage then the vaccine helps fix. |
