Shingles painWell, shingles is a skin condition. Usually, skin conditions itch and are embarrassing, but they do not actually hurt. Unfortunately, shingles pain is nothing to be ignored and it does not tend to go away on its own. See, the problem with the shingles pain is that it is somewhat immune to classic painkillers, which only tend to dull its edges, but not eliminate it completely. A throb is better than an ache, but it is worse than nothing. Basically, the shingles pain is caused by the inflammation of the nerves at the surface of the skin. This inflammation is the direct result of the interaction between the varicella zoster virus and the immune cells that fight for supremacy. The battle is rather long and, if the disease is left untreated, the shingles pain can last for weeks. The really unfortunate thing is that the shingles complications can cause is postherpetic neuralgia. What does that mean? Well, in general, anything that contains neuralgia in its name indicates chronic pain. In this case, the shingles pain does not disappear with the disease that causes it, but remains etched permanently in the skin of the sufferer. Sometimes, it is a dull throb, sometimes it makes itself known through stabs of pain that appear randomly. Regrettably, this type of shingles pain will accompany the sufferer for the rest of his or her life. |
