Shingles contagious picturesThe first thing that a patient should ask their attending physician after they have been diagnosed with a skin problem is if that disease is contagious. Thus, once the shingles diagnosis has been set, the only question that remains is the following: is shingles contagious? Well, unfortunately, shingles is contagious. The unusual thing about the contagious shingles is that it is not communicable to everyone. Yes, there are people who cannot catch shingles. Why? Simple. If the person who comes in contact with a shingles patient has already had chicken pox or even shingles, he or she cannot be infected by the same virus twice. The contagious shingles, however, spreads pretty fast. For example, if a person touches the lesions of a herpes zoster sufferer and they have never had chicken pox before, the virus jumps almost instantaneously from one person to the other. How can one protect oneself from contagious shingles? The answer is pretty simple and straightforward: do not touch open and purulent lesions, do not share bathing space, clothes or towels with a shingles patient and do not wash your clothes in the same washing machine as the infected person. Now, this might seem a bit unreasonable, since not many people have two washing machines laying around, ready to be used, but the solution is to pour some disinfectant in the machine right before you wash your clothes. This should kill the pesky little virus and you should be safe. It is very important not to scratch, even if the itching is almost unbearable, because the blisters may become purulent and leave scars. Shingles is contagious. Any person with shingles should stay home. We must especially avoid contact with pregnant women, infants or those weakened by illness. |
